Meet the New Addition

I got a tattoo!!!!!
Yes it is the truth!! Are you really surprised? This is what happens when Lara and Emmy are left alone to think and giggle for too long--- We get these ideas and then are crazy about following through with them! Our peace dove tattoo idea has been with us since we got our piercings together in high school. We were just way too scared and low on cash to have followed through then. But there we were, with one more day left together in Argentina, knowing that it would be 15$ to make our childhood dream come true.....so we did it!!
Lara, Adam, Scott and I all had a great time together. We ended our travels in Rosario, Argentina, where I am now with Scott and his brother Brad. Lara and Adam left yesterday to go back to their new life in Buenos Aires. I miss them already. At least I have a tattoo etched in me forever to make me not miss her as much in the future. :)
Now it is onward for me, Scott and Brad. Our next stop is Salta, Argentina and then to Bolivia for my birthday.
GO SEAHAWKS!!!

Calleros en Argentina

While staying in the Capital Federal in Argentina, I had the amazing opportunity of meeting Adrian Callero, one of the many Calleros that found thier way down to South America at the turn of the century from Genova, Italy.
Adrian is a really great new cousin! We had such a fun time together, and from the get go, there was an already established comfort level. Of course there is some debate as to weather or not we are really from the same Callero blood line, but if not, I feel that all Calleros in the world have some sorta special connection.
Adrian was born in Entre Rios, which is North East of Buenos Aires. He moved to BA when he was 1 year old. The rest of his family still lives there. He is the only child, but his father comes a big family and his father´s father from an even bigger one and so on and so fourth. He describes his family and loud, fun, big and surrounded by love. There are more than 100 of them in Entre Rios and each year they all get together.
His grandfather is 87 and is still going strong. He lives on the same land that his grandfather lived on when he first settled in Argentina from Italy years ago. His grandfather never learned to read or write, because he spent his youth out in the pampa of Argentina, roaming around with his horses. Still to this day he wakes up, drinks his mate(tea), puts his knife and gun in his belt and goes out to see his horses.
I like to think that their are certain yearnings and interests that we all have that aren´t put their coincidently, but that have been born in us long before we even existed. I think that family is more that just looking alike, but there are certain soul characteristics that are also passed along through the generations. I like to think that my passion for Spanish, my love for horses when I was a child, my interest in the countryside and immigration has been my hearts way of keeping in contact with my family that I thought that I would never be able to meet.

La Buena Suerte Only Brings You So Far

I pretty much jinxed myself the other day. I can specifically remember thinking "Wow, in all of my travels, I have always been safe and never really had anything unfortunate happen that would cause a crisis to a traveler." Well as of recently, I will have to say I have had some pretty low down bad days in our little Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It all started after last Sunday night. My cousin Adrian Callero (who I finally met, and will write story of him in due time) took me Lara, Adam and Sabrina out to eat Asado. Asado here in Argentina is basically and giant Cow fest. (so I learned a little later in the dinner) Asado starts off by first eating meet appetizers, which filled me up and consisted of cow blood balls that yes I did eat.......then a salad...then a meat second course which included cow kidneys and the main course which was just giant hunks of meat and then dessert. Now after this dinner I was feeling really tired and weird. I thought maybe it is from Lara and I staying up a talking until 5 in the morning the night before, or maybe it was that eating marathon I just participated in, but whatever it was I felt that Monday morning I could kill it off with a lot of sleep. I slept lots Monday, basically the whole day, and each time that I would wake up to go to the bathroom or find food, I would feel worse and worse and had developed a horrible sore throat. So the next day I checked out of our hostel and moved myself with Lara and Adam's stuff to a hotel. My thought was that I needed a whole day to relax alone in a bed with TV, air conditioning, and I could take baths, and then I will get better.

But, after Lara and Adam came back from running around the city looking for jobs and apartments, I had hit an all time low, and really felt like death with a fever that made my clothes so wet from the sweat, it was nasty. They had found an apartment for us to lease out for the week we have left here, that would be cheaper that staying in hostels and hotels. So the plan was this: Lara would take Emmy to the doctor or hospital and we would meet up at the new location of our week long apartment. Luckily Argentina has great free medical services and a doctor quickly looked down my throat and prescribed me an anti biotic and we were on our way to our new residence. We arrived right has Adam and Sabrina were arriving with our entire luggage, we helped them carry some stuff in and waited for the elevator. I thought...hmmm...I wonder where my red bag is in the pile of luggage.....oh someone has it somewhere.....But as the story goes it was left in the taxi and the taxi driver was long gone. I guess one might not feel that loosing a red bad is that important, after all I do have 1000000 purses. This bag was special for many reasons; First because it was a gift from my brother Nic before I left for Europe last year, Second it had a journal in it that Scott bought me for Christmas that was leather with cool Incan designs on it a perfect Emmy journal, Third it had my address book in it with all of my contacts of people I met in Peru, addresses and numbers of all of my loved ones(don’t be alarmed if you don’t get a call from me right away) and last but not least....My passport and digital camera.

Now for some reason it doesn't surprise me that my camera was lost. I mean come one, let's re-trace what has happened to my last cameras. In high school Becca ran over one, then another one blew up in Becca's car on the way to Las Vegas, and one got left on a bus in Mexico, all with full rolls of film. Good thing that this time I had already uploaded all of my photos. The biggest headache in this process is the passport. I will be traveling until March, crossing many boarders, what is a girl to do without a passport? After many attempts, (getting a hold of an actual person in the embassy is a pain in the ass) I talked to someone at the embassy who gave me directions of what to do. I need to fill out a police report, get my pics taken, and go to the embassy with a load of cash and they will grant me an emergency passport that will be valid for a year. So it sounds all; easy in theory, but try doing all of this when you have a raging fever and a throat that feels like there are razors in it. I woke up in the morning and counted that I only swallowed 4 times in an hour! It is just too painful otherwise.

I guess times like these when things don't go as planned, I feel like a brat for complaining, and whining about my sucky life. As I hate saying when I am in a pissy mood, but know it makes me feel better to think... "At least I'm alive and things could have been a lot worse." Everything in this situation is fixable.......I mean I guess I can't be riding a wave a good travel luck forever!

Together at Last!

It is the truth, Lara and I have reuntied in the city of Tango, Buenos Aires!!!! After I spent a wonderful week in Bariloche with Scott´s family, I have met up with Lara and Adam and one of their friend´s from Honduras, Sabrina here in Buenos Aires. Scott´s parents and youngest brother have returned to the states, and unfortunately on their last hours here got robbed...sound familiar mom and dad....crazy how they get you right when you are leaving. Scott has now moved on with his brother Brad, his uncle, and grandparents to Northern Argentina and will be arriving back here the 16th.

Lara and Adam look great and it feels wonderful to be reunited with them. I arrived to the hostel and they were out looking for an apartment and so I decided to wonder around the city. Luckily I saw them walking across a busy street, and Lara dodged traffic and ran across to see me, and from that moment on, as one can guess, it feels as though I´ve been here with her and Adam for a lifetime. We are having a great time, despite our crappy humid hostel of fleas. They have already found an apartment in their two days of looking.... and let me tell you, it is pretty cute and fancy all in one.

I still have not been able to get ahold of my cousin Adrian Callero. I call everyday but he is never home, or answering his cell phone. It seems like the Calleros here are a lot busier than the Calleros in the USA. Last night we ate an Italian dinner in the district called La Boca, where a vast majority of the immigrants from Genoa would immigrate and build their lives at the turn of the century. The houses were all so colorful and cute, just like Italy. I sat their and tried to imagine this little neighborhood 100 years ago wondering what it would have been like. It was even cooler than little Italy in New York and San Fransico. Today I was looking in the phone book, and not only did I find 6 Callero families, but one woman with the name Emilia Callero. I sorta want to stalk her down. Sorry mom, I looked for DeFuria, but their was none, it means that our southern roots are just a little more unique to the American continent. I will be keeping the family updated just in case I am ever able to get ahold of Adrian.

One last parting note....for all of those Super Trooper fans out there, I met the guy famous for the line .....Sorry we don´t have Literacola......at a bar watching the USC v Texas game the other night, it was great!

Beautiful Bariloche

Happy New Year From Bariloche, Argentina!!
